About Hawthorne Point

Hawthorne Point is located on the east side of Gloucester Harbor, midway between downtown and the harbor's mouth.
Originally the site of a summer hotel, the Hawthorne Point condominiums were built in 1982 after the original hotel was destroyed by fire.
The unique siting on the harbor affords spectacular views of sunsets over Ten Pound Island and cool breezes during the summertime.

Gloucester Harbor was visited by Samuel Champlain in 1606, who named it Beauport. Although John Smith knew of this harbor, having visited in 1614, the Pilgrims settled further south in what is now Plymouth. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1623. Early settlers found farming difficult on the rocky soil of Cape Ann. Gloucester's maritime industry began with shipbuilding in the early 18th century, with commercial fishing becoming a major industry in the 19th century. The fishing indstry in Gloucester has been declining since the 1980's, succumbing to the effective commercial extinction of many species and the ensuing regulation attempting to preserve those fish which remain.

The natural beauty of the harbor and surrounding areas continues to draw visitors from around the world. Gloucester contains many of the largest beaches on Cape Ann (the "other" cape of Massachusetts) including Good Harbor Beach, Wingaersheek Beach, and Coffin's Beach. Gloucester's shoreline includes both sandy and rocky shores, as well as large salt marshes. The harbor and connected waterways provide a uniquely varied environment for small watercraft, such as sailboats, kayaks and stand up paddleboards.

Whale watching also attracts many visitors. Stellwagen Bank is an underwater continuation of the glacial deposit forming Cape Code and Cape Ann. This underwater plateau halfway between Gloucester and Provincetown is an important summer home for humpback whales.

The marine environment together with the natural beauty of the surrounding glacial landscape of Gloucester has attracted many well known artists during the late 19th and early 20th century, including Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Stuart Davis, Childe Hassan, Marsden Hartley, and John Sloan. This artistic traditions continues today, with the artist colony on Rocky Neck continuing to provide a vibrant artistic community for both artists and their clients.

The condominiums at Hawthorne Point offer residents easy access to the harbor and Rocky Neck. Western facing views over the water provide spectacular sunsets year-round. Fishing boats and lobsterman work the harbor while others play in their sailboats, kayaks, or gig boats. The annual fireworks launch from Stage Fort Park, just on the other side of the harbor behind Ten Pound Island.
