The seawall at Hawthorne Point

As an owner of one of the units at Hawthorne Point, I created this website to express my personal views.

From the water, the seawall is a prominent feature of the condominiums. As a historical matter, seawalls at Hawthorne Point have had a long history, although perhaps not as straightforward as many would like to believe.

Below is an inset from the 1917-1919 Gloucester atlas.

The rough outline of the seawall dates back to the early 20th century. George Stacy, a prolific hotel developer, acquired several properties and developed the Hawthorne Inn. Initially Stacy proposed to build a large granite pier extending to the low water line. Although he was granted license 2332 to build the pier, he never executed the plan. Instead, a modest structure was erected, for which no plans, approval or license appears to have been recorded. The Gloucester Atlas compiled during 1917-1919 shows the area of the seawall occupied by Endicott and Felton Hall cottages.

Below is a photo taken in 1982.

This photo appeared in a New York Times advertising supplement on August 29, 1982 featuring the newly built condominiums. The photo shows a seawall in the foreground formerly occupied by the Fenton Hall cottage. The grassy area further back is where the Endicott cottage used to stand, although the structure was somewhat derelict in 1982. Not much if any standing seawall is seen either directly behind the condominium units or supporting the grassy pier.

The seawall suffered extensive damage during the storm on March 2, 2018. The photograph below shows the Fenton Hall cottage section sustained significant damage. Green tarps have been placed to limit further erosin of the structure.

In the distance, the Endicott cottage structure lost the northwest corner during the storm. The hole is visible underneath the urns.
